*Barefoot is classed as anyone running in Vibram Fivefingers or any other minimalist, zero drop shoe or who is actually running barefoot.

Probably best I give you some background to this article first. I started running in February 2010, like most people do; I put on the runners I had around the house, a pair of shorts a t-shirt and just went running. After some advice from other runners and a coach I slowed down and started to improve my aerobic fitness, so I could run longer distances. In May the same year I completed my first half marathon. I was feeling really good about my running abilities, so I decided to start marathon training, but got an injury in my left shin. With rest and a different pair of runners it went away, never to return. Thanks to that injury I had to back out of the Auckland marathon.

That experience didn’t deter me though and I started training for a marathon in April 2011, the Connemarathon no less! Training went well, but I started getting hamstring issues and that interrupted my training to the extent that I missed some of my long runs. The marathon itself was excellent and the first half of the race went really well. Then the first real hill came along and I had to walk, with hamstring pain, and did a run/walk/run from there on, especially on the last hill (mountain) called “The Hell of the West”. I managed to build up my speed going up to and over the line, but I was in pain. It was mainly my right glutes and the top of my hamstring.

The Cork News: Interview by Maria Tracey

Owen Loughrey, Midleton, 36 - The Barefoot Runner

"The run I love doing the most is Ballyannan Woods. When I leave the house, I’m into a mile before I’m into the forest... well, it’s a ‘Midleton-sized’ forest! It’s a five-mile route, and perfect to bring my Beagle, Gromit on. When we got him as a pup, running was the only thing that would tire him out, otherwise he would have torn the place apart!

The forest is covered with brambles and there are some slippy and slidey parts, but you are surrounded by nature. During winter, I have a head light on, and you really have to have all your senses about you - feeling the ground and hearing the movement of trees. Of course, you get dirty and wet but there is nothing better than coming back covered in mud with twigs sticking between your toes. When I go out in the spring, I’m disappointed if I don’t have a few daisies lodged during the run!

Vibram FiveFingers Kids KSO giveaway [Competition closed]

Shoes begin the process of shaping our feet from a young age.  If we force our children into overly structured, heavily cushioned trainers, they will pay the price of arch issues, sore knees, and weak muscles as the move into their teenage years. Eventually the trainers will cause so much damage that they will eventually hang up their trainers and head away from a fit and healthy life.

All we ask if that you do not force shoes on your kids. Certainly there are times when society says you have to wear shoes, but there are plenty of other times when shoes are optional. Let you kids go barefoot whenever possible. They will thank you for it!

With summer approaching, barefoot.ie is giving away 20 pairs of Kids KSO Vibram FiveFingers. Kids KSO allow your children’s feet to function naturally, as if they were barefoot, while protecting your kids feet.

To get your hands on a pair, post on Facebook a photo of you and your child getting barefoot together. (www.facebook.com/barefoot.ie) alternatively you can email the photo to us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
